Summer Internship Interview: Sun Microsystems

Recently we interviewed Wanda Brown Nicholas, the Campus Ambassador and hiring manager for students across the U.S. and Canada. Wanda gave us a lot of excellent tips on steps towards success in this company as well as helpful information about a working for Sun Microsystems. Let’s take a look!

What is it like to be a recruiter?
Though she never gets to meet her interns, she manages them virtually, meaning she works with them through the Campus Ambassador Community website they have. Those interns then start their own community website called the Awesome Group, which Sun Microsystems plans to do some of their hiring.

What do you like about your job as a recruiter?
Wanda loves that she is conveniently able to work at home, however, she says it can be difficult because you have to be self-motivated and self-disciplined. By doing her job at home, she calls into meetings and uses different online tools to keep up with her team and works with her students either every day or on a schedule. She rarely gets to meet with her team because everything is done on the computer or over the phone.

Why should students consider working at Sun?
It’s a lot of fun! There is nothing else like it! It is such an opportunity to excel! They encourage your uniqueness and your willingness to be successful.

What type of students are you looking for?
Not only do they look for computer science majors, but they also look for a lot of different students like business majors and marketing majors as well as students who are dynamic and willing to move forward.

What advice would you give to students who are looking to become a part of this company?
You have to be unique, self-motivated, and able to face a challenge! You also must have the desire to take on new projects. If you can do this, you definitely have the ability to succeed!
